SOLO Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course 4/5–6, 2008
So, So, So Necessary
by Richard CableWhether you are a casual hiker with a friend or two, a leader for Major Excursions, or a local trip leader, what I and 39 others experienced on this first weekend in April at SOLO Wilderness First Aid Training is valuable beyond valuable. So why and what did it entail?
Why? Many of us live our lives as if there will never be an emergency. And if there is an emergency, there will be help close at hand. Hummmm…for all of us who hike and bike in remote areas, and that can sometimes be not that far, we should each be equipped to meet the challenges of a downed hiker, biker, outdoor enthusiast.
What was training like? It was an amazing two days spent with two equally amazing trainers with a dazzling sense of humor. Equal amounts of time were spent in the classroom setting followed by application in the field. Topics: fractures, hypothermia, evacuation and group dynamics, burns, abrasions, etc.
For me this was a weekend of training not to be missed. If one only hikes a few days a year, we each need to be prepared with a proper first aid kit and the knowledge of what to do with it.
By all means, avail yourself of this opportunity that the CT Chapter provides.
