Hike Letter and Number Rating Guide
Example: B3C = 5-9 Mile Hike, Moderate Pace (1.5-2.0 mph), and Average Terrain

First Letter (Mileage)

Middle Number (Leaders Pace)

Last Letter (Terrain)

AA = 13 miles and over

1 = Very Fast (2.5 mph and Faster)

A = Very Strenuous

A = 9-13 miles

2 = Fast (2.0 - 2.5 mph)

B = Strenuous

B = 5-9 miles

3 = Moderate (1.5 - 2.0 mph)

C = Average

C = Under 5 miles

4 = Leisurely (0.0 - 1.5 mph)

D =Easy


 

 

Day Hike Recommended Packing List

1. Hiking Boots, Please do not Wear Tennis Shoes
2. Light Weight Inner Socks
3. Wool Heavy Weight Outer Socks
4. Water, Please Bring at Least Two Quarts of Water. You might want to Freeze one Quart the night Before.
5. Hat
6. Insect Repellent
7. Sun Screen
8. Granola Bars, and or Trail Mix
9. Rain Jacket
10. Light Sweater
11. Day Pack or Hip Pack

Kayaking Trip List

1. PFD (Personal Floatation Device), Usually one will be provided with Kayak.
2. Dry Change of Clothes and Shoes to change into after trip.
3. Towel
4. Foot Protection, a must for protection from stuff on river bed, lake bed, or ocean  floor. Sandals are NOT recommended.
5. Hat
6. Sunscreen (a must for being on the water)
7. Straps and/or Floatation for Eyeglasses

Do not Bring:
1. Jewelry, Watches, and anything that does not float or that you don't mind loosing.


 

 

Directions to Popular Hikes:


Sleeping Giant:

Sleeping Giant State Park (Hamden, CT): Directions: follow Merrit (15) North to exit 61. Travel North on route 10 (Whitney Ave.) and turn right onto Mt. Carmel Ave. You will see Quinnipiac College on your right and the Sleeping Giant State Park entrance on your left.


Ragged Mountain:

Directions to commuter parking lot for carpooling to trailhead: Heading East on I-84, take exit 28. Go left at the stop light at the end of the ramp. You will see a sign for the commuter lot on your right.


Bear Mountain:

Hike Leader Qualifications

The Young Members committee qualifies HIKE  leaders through the same process as the rest of the CT AMC.
