Standards for Leader
Certification
The Mountaineering Chair shall have the authority to determine
if a person meets the qualifications for certification as a
Leader for any type of trip based upon input from that person on
the required Mountaineering Trip Leader Application Form. The
Mountaineering Chair, or a person so designated by the Chair,
shall maintain a roster of all Members of the Mountaineering
Committee and their current certifications as Trip Leaders. Once
a person is certified as a trip leader, that certification shall
remain in effect unless a period of three years pass within
which that person does not lead any activity or club trip.
These Standards For
Certification shall take effect thirty days after being ratified
by a meeting of the Mountaineering Committee called for that
purpose with two weeks notice given by E- mail to all persons on
the list. At this meeting, two thirds in attendance must approve
of the rules, with at least fifteen people voting yes. These
rules may be modified
by use of the same schedule.
Qualifications for Trip
Leadership
To be considered for certification, all new leaders must
posses at least 2 of the 4 following qualifications:
1. Possess co-leading
experience with the CT AMC Mountaineering.
2. Attended training session(s) with AMC Mountaineering or
another recognized
educational organization.
3. Attended AMC Leadership Training Workshop.
4. Possess experience as a Mountaineering Trip Leader with
another organization.
In addition, all Leaders must exhibit the Standards for Trip
Leaders for the activities they
are certified to lead.
Top Rope Rock Climbing Trip (Evening Top Rope):
Qualifications:
- Leader must be a Member of the AMC in good standing.
- Leader must be over 18 years of age, and have been
currently climbing for at least
two seasons.
- Leader must understand and know proper set up of top
ropes.
- Leader shall be proficient in belaying and repelling.
Responsibilities:
- Leader, or another qualified person designated by leader,
shall inspect all top rope
set-ups and/or assist any person setting up a top rope
who is not certified to do so.
Lead Rock Climbing Trip (Day Trip):
Qualifications:
- Leader must meet all qualifications for a Top Rope Rock
Climbing trip, plus
- Leader must have a minimum of two years current
experience leading roped climbs.
Responsibilities:
- Leader has the same responsibilities of Top Rope Rock
Climbing Trip, emphasizing
the following:
- It is not the duty or responsibility of the leader to
insure that any person who chooses to
lead a climb is capable of undertaking that climb
successfully.
Top Rope Ice Climbing
Trip:
Qualifications:
- Leader must meet all qualifications for a Top Rope Rock
Climbing Trip, plus
- Leader must have a minimum of two years current ice
climbing experience.
Responsibilities:
- Leader, or another qualified person designated by
leader, shall inspect all top rope set-ups and/or assist
any person setting up a top rope who is not certified
to do so.
Lead Ice Climbing Trip:
Qualifications:
- Leader must meet all standards for a Top Rope Ice
Climbing Trip and for a Lead Rock Climbing Trip, plus
- Leader will have a minimum of two years current
experience leading roped ice climbs.
Responsibilities:
- Leader has the same responsibilities of Top Rope Ice
Climbing Trip, emphasizing the following:
- It is not the duty or responsibility of the leader to
insure that any person who chooses to lead a climb is capable
of undertaking that climb successfully.
Weekend Trip Qualifications:
- Organizer shall be a Member of the AMC in good standing.
- Since participants engage in many diverse activities,
climbing, hiking, biking, boating, etc. the leader is not
required to be certified for any specific activity.
Responsibilities
- Trip leader will make arrangements for group campsite or
other accommodations and
shared meals or happy hours, as the leader deems to be
appropriate or necessary.
Bouldering Trip:
Qualifications:
- Leader must be skilled in Spotting and understand Crash
Pad placement.
