Introduction to Rock Climbing I & II

Part I and Part II APRIL 25th & MAY 2nd, 2009

This is course is run once or twice annually.

Leader: Gini Kramer

 

Cost: $TBD

 

Part I - April 25 -Saturday 8:00am - 4:00pm

Location:  Outdoors. Central Ct.

Agenda:
1-   Introductions, Overview of equipment, tying knots, rope dynamics, and safety.
2-   Learning belay technique and tying the figure eight knot.
3-   Overview of the Top Rope climbing system.
4-   Students will practice belaying with assistance of instructors. 

5- Lunch Break
6-   Students will be evaluated on belay technique before they are permitted to belay without an instructor assisting them.

7 - Students are free to climb and belay each other under supervision by instructors.
*All Climbing Equipment Provided


Part II - May 2nd - Saturday  8:00am - 4:00pm

Location: Outdoors. Central Ct.


Agenda:
1-   Review knots and safety issues. 

2 - Students are free to climb and belay each other under supervision by AMC Leaders.  Leaders will offer tips and coaching on climbing techniques.

3- Lunch Break

3 - Lead Climbing Demonstration.

4 - Discussion of climbing opportunities with the AMC and beyond.
*All Climbing Equipment Provided

Self Rescue-April 18 & 19th
Learn friction knots, belay escape, counter-weight and
assisted rappels, and other important climbing skills.
Professional instructor.  Fee TBD.


Anchor Building Workshop-May 3rd
Learn to place gear efficiently and effectively and
combine multiple placements to build SRENE anchors.
This professionally taught class, or equivalent, is a
pre-requisite for the Lead Climbing Workshop.

Top Rope Anchor Workshop-May 9th
Learn to build SRENE top rope anchors with experienced
AMC instructors.  Fee TBD.


Lead Climbing Workshop-May 16th

This workshop will prepare a limited number of
participants to take "the sharp end" and begin lead
climbing.  Participants have extensive top rope
climbing experience and have completed the Climbing
Anchor Workshop or equivalent.  Professional
instructor. Fee TBD

 

Lead Climbing Practice-May 17th
Practice your skills learned in the previous day at Chapel Ledges in MA



Intermediate Climbing Workshop - May 23rd

Ready to move beyond top-rope rock climbing? This AMC
sponsored, professionally led class will prepare
participants to follow/second single and multi-pitch
rock climbs. Learn efficient rope management
techniques, basic gear placement and removal,
ascending the climbing rope, rappelling and rappel
back-up systems. Mastery of these skills is required
to participate in AMC sponsored lead climbs. Extensive
top-rope climbing experience req'd. Fee TBD
