Event Leadership Requirements
AMC HQ Volunteer General Leader Resources
The Mountaineering Chair shall have the authority to determine if a person meets the qualifications for certification as a leader for any type of event. The Mountaineering Chair, or a person so designated by the Chair, shall maintain a roster of all Leaders of the Mountaineering Committee and their current certifications as event leaders. Once a person is certified as a event leader, that certification shall remain in effect unless a period of three years has passed within which that person does not lead or co-lead any committee activity.
Basic Qualifications for all Event Leaders
- Must be a member of the AMC in good standing.
- Must be over 18 years of age.
- Must agree to follow AMC procedures and requirements.
- Must have been climbing for at least two seasons and one of these with the CT AMC.
- Must understand and have demonstrated the proper set up of top ropes.
- Must be proficient in belaying by current standards.
Additional Basic Qualification for new Event Leaders
- Must possess co-leading experience with the CT AMC Climbing/Mountaineering Committee.
- Must have attended a training class with the CT AMC Climbing/Mountaineering Committee or another recognized educational organization.
- Must have reviewed the CT AMC Top Rope Guideline document with the Committee Chair.
Top Rope Rock Climbing events
Responsibilities:
- Leader, or another qualified person designated by leader shall inspect all top rope set-ups and/or assist any person setting up a top rope who is not certified to do so.
Lead Rock Climbing Events
Qualifications:
- Leader must meet all qualifications for a top rope rock climbing trip
- Leader must have a minimum of two years current experience leading roped climbs.
Responsibilities:
- Leader has the same responsibilities of top rope rock climbing trip, emphasizing the following:
- It is not the duty or responsibility of the leader to ensure that any person who chooses to lead a climb is capable of undertaking that climb successfully.
Top Rope Ice Climbing Events
Qualifications:
- Leader must meet all qualifications for a top rope rock climbing trip, plus
- Leader must have a minimum of two years current ice climbing experience.

- Leader, or another qualified person designated by leader, shall inspect all top rope set-ups and/or assist any person setting up a top rope who is not certified to do so.
Lead Ice Climbing Events
Qualifications:
- Leader must meet all standards for a top rope ice climbing trip and for a lead rock climbing trip, plus
- Leader will have a minimum of two years current experience leading roped ice climbs.
