Rattlesnake Mountain: Farmington, CT        Google Map

There are 4 major climbing areas on Rattlesnake Mountain (north to south):  Porcupine Hole, Green Wall, Will Warren’s Den, and Rattlesnake Rock.  The Metacomet Trail runs the ridgeline and connects the crags.

There are three parking areas (north to south):  Rt. 6, Forest Hills Dr., and Metacomet Rd.  Driving directions are listed below.

Generally, the approach from Rt 6. is quickest for Porcupine Hole and easiest for the other crags if you are unfamiliar with the area.  The approach from Forest Hills Dr. is a bit shorter but harder to find. The approach to Rattlesnake Rock takes pretty much the same amount of time from all parking areas.

Rt. 6 Parking

You will encounter Porcupine Hole (on right) in 15-20 mins, Green Wall (on right)  in 20-25 mins, Will Warren’s Den in 27 mins., and the top of Rattlesnake Rock in 30 mins.  The beginning of the trail can be muddy after a rain.

Forest Hills Drive Parking

Park in the cul-de-sac at the end of the Forest Hills Dr. Follow the power lines north.  At the 2nd pole, pick up the small trail that heads right, into the woods. There is/was some surveyors tape on part of the trail. The trail which leads to the base of Green Wall can be hard to follow.  If you lose the trail, just head uphill until you hit the Metacomet Trail.  From the top of Green Wall, follow the Metacomet Trail left for Porcupine Hole or right for Will Warren’s Den and Rattlesnake Rock.

Metacomet Road Parking

Follow the directions for Pinnacle (Lone Pine) but hike left (north) on the blue-blazed Metacomet Trail instead of right. You will encounter the base of Rattlesnake Rock in 10 mins., Will Warren’s Den in 12 mins., Green Wall in 20 mins., and finally Porcupine Hole in 22 mins.
